World’s largest festival of public science talks heading to Coventry and Warwickshire

Coventry and Warwickshire will join hundreds of locations across the globe in hosting the world’s largest festival of public science talks this month.

Pint of Science Coventry and Warwickshire will bring talks on everything from Artificial Intelligence to snake bite diagnosis to three locations from May 22 to 24 in a global celebration of all things science.

Hundreds of cities around the world are taking part, with 17 researchers from the University of Warwick and Coventry University set to host a wide range of engaging talks and activities at Warwick Arts Centre, Twisted Barrel in Coventry and 1 Mill Street in Leamington.

The three-day festival, which is taking place locally as part of the University of Warwick’s Resonate programme, started with three cities in 2013. This year marks its tenth anniversary, with events taking place in over 25 countries and hundreds of cities around the world.

Each night will provide a unique line up of talks, demonstrations and live experiments held in a relaxed and informal environment.

Attendees in Coventry and Warwickshire will enjoy a variety of intriguing talks such as “Can AI do research?”, “New Fangled Approaches for Snake Bite Diagnosis”, “Know Your River – Rivers as a resource for all”, and “How to increase housing affordability?”- alongside many more.

Pint of Science provides a platform for researchers to share their stories and audiences an opportunity to ask questions about science to those directly behind it.

Dr Alex Baker, one of the speakers from the University of Warwick, said: “Pint of Science will see thousands of scientists heading out to pubs, cafes and restaurants around the world. Here in Coventry and Warwickshire we are excited to welcome people to events that go beyond biology, physics, and chemistry by looking at social science, the arts and everything else in between.”

“We aim to make our events accessible to all with an incredible range of cutting-edge topics set to be discussed, including by some of our very own researchers. So, bring your curiosity and satisfy your thirst for fascinating, scientific fun.”

Pint of Science founders Dr Praveen Paul and Dr Michael Motskin wanted to bring back the personal touch to science. Dr Praveen Paul said: “It’s hard to believe that a small one-off project between a few friends has turned into thousands of events over ten years! Pint of Science would not be possible without our enthusiastic and dedicated volunteers across the country who work so hard to show you the inspiring research happening on our doorsteps.

“Our programme is packed full of events, which will inspire, challenge and encourage us all to be curious. The only difficulty is choosing which of the brilliant events to go to!”
