Why Massachusetts?
The USA is the largest, most competitive and technologically advanced economy in the world. US Gross Domestic Product (GDP) has consistently seen growth of 1.8% or more since 2011 (source: DIT).
In the energy sector, growing consumer demand and world class innovation make the USA an attractive market with total investment in the US energy sector at $276 billion in 2016 (the second-largest in the world) (source: US Department of Energy).
The UK and the US share many of the same challenges:
- Widespread and rapid electrification especially with Electrical Vehicle uptake and resulting changes in load
- Smart meter rollout across the UK and across many US states
- Distributed generation growth (more renewables, consumers generating and exporting)
- Energy storage more widely deployed, especially at distribution level
- Similar challenges in managing and balancing demand
- Aging grid infrastructure
Massachusetts is a leader in developing energy systems of the future, offering unique opportunities for innovation and collaboration:
- Massachusetts has a growing and dynamic clean energy sector employing over 109,000 people in 2017. (source:MassCEC)
- Massachusetts is home to leading research organisations in the sector: Massachusetts Clean Energy Center, Greentown Labs Incubator, Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
