New Culture Conversations to start in Coventry

The team delivering Coventry UK City of Culture 2021 will hold open public discussions from September, as an opportunity to talk about the breadth of culture happening in Coventry, share ideas, network with new people and be part of city conversations.

Coventry City of Culture Trust will hold the first in a series of ‘Culture Conversations’ every second Tuesday of the month at Alfred’s Café in the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum between 8am and 9am beginning on September 10.

Once a month, a second conversation will move around the city and take place between 6-7pm, to give the whole community an opportunity to attend, share ideas and discover more about the exciting opportunities that come with being UK City of Culture.

Each Culture Conversation will have a broad theme to give events focus but they will not be limited to those topics. The first conversation will be based on the theme of DIY Culture, including local grassroots culture and creativity.

Chenine Bhathena, Creative Director of Coventry City of Culture Trust, said: “We want to use this platform as an opportunity to ensure we are abreast of all the cultural activity currently happening in the city, understanding everyone’s ambitions as we start to fix the programme for 2021.

“We invite all citizens – whether artists, people working in the city, students and residents – to bring their creativity and great ideas and join us in a lively exchange, to ensure together we create an extraordinary year.

“Our year as UK City of Culture is 16 months away so there is plenty of time to be part of the programme. The programme is starting to really get a strong shape now and we hope this is an opportunity to make sure that we can really keep ideas and excitement flowing.

“Coventry’s UK City of Culture will have the city’s people at its heart, a joyful celebration rooted in our past but with a focus on who we are now and our future.  It will be created with and by our citizens and give platforms for local new, emerging and established creative talent.

“These Culture conversations are all about ensuring we develop ideas with citizens and local artists across the city and make sure we show the world who we are – our pioneering spirit, our activism, our youthfulness and our internationalism.”

Each Culture Conversation will be free to attend and will be accessible to all. No pre-booking is necessary.
