What's the Story? Developing Strategic Decision-Making with Management Accounting for SMEs

In today’s increasingly complex business world, strategic decision making is paramount to the success and growth of any business. In this workshop, SME leaders will access the latest developments in management accounting research and practice to help enhance their decision making and help transform organizational performance. This will allow any business leader to tackle strategic decisions with the benefit of a clear and comprehensible framework. This workshops is aimed at leaders of businesses with up to around 30 employees.
Led by Ian Cornelius and Professor Ivo De-Loo
Getting to know your thought leaders:
Ian Cornelius has worked with organisations from both the private and the public sector. His private sector clients have included BT, Northern Foods, Pearson, The Learning Skills Network, The adidas Group, Next, Vetco Gray, Linpac, The Economist, Unibet and Barclays. He has also lectured on the MBA programmes of Warwick Business School, and written two books (published by FT Prentice Hall) on shareholder value and Value-Based Management (VBM). Ian has developed a deep technical and practical understanding of a variety of financial management and management accounting topics, such as best practice budgeting, investment appraisal techniques, financial analysis , business case production, cost management, strategy and strategic choice, and in particular the creation and management of shareholder value.
Ivo De-Loo is Professor in Accounting at the Aston Business School. He received his doctoral degree in quantitative economics from Maastricht University in 1995 (cum laude), and obtained his doctorate degree from the Open University of the Netherlands in 2008. Before accepting his current position, he was Professor in Management Accounting & Control, and Associate Professor in Methods & Methodology at Nyenrode Business University in the Netherlands, (Senior) Lecturer in Management Accounting at the Open University of the Netherlands, and Junior Researcher at Statistics Netherlands and UNU-MERIT. Ivo has over 20 years of experience in university education, PhD-supervision, and university management. Currently, he is interested in how management accounting and control is enacted in organizations, using insights from practice theory and the application of visual methods in particular.

We have experience of working with hundreds of SMEs to support their business growth, with investment ready pitching competitions, through our student focused start-up support and incubation centre and on high profile programmes such as Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses.
These workshops are not part of any of our externally funded programmes, they have been developed by the Centre for Growth to support our alumni network and other business leaders in our region.
